Dr. Sofijanova for covid-19 in children: General inflammation may occur and affect the organs

The SARS-CoV-2 virus in children usually gives a milder clinical picture that can only be treated with symptomatic therapy. However, it is necessary to follow each case carefully and cautiously and if a deterioration in health is observed, to make additional tests that would indicate more serious syndromes and conditions, such as multisystem inflammatory syndrome, said prof. Dr. Aspazija Sofijanova, Director of the Clinic for Pediatrics and President of the Association of Pediatricians, which was part of the weekly online discussions organized by the Medical Chamber in order to facilitate communication and exchange of experiences and knowledge on prevention and treatment of cocaine- 19 among physicians at all levels of the health care system.

In children, covid-19 is usually mild and is treated with symptomatic therapy. However, if the condition worsens and the fever lasts for more than three days, additional tests should be considered because in rare cases, children can be severely affected and the clinical manifestations may differ from those of adults. In April 2020, reports from the United Kingdom documented a presentation in children similar to incomplete Kawasaki disease or toxic shock syndrome. Since then, there have been reports of similarly affected children in other parts of the world. The condition is called multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, pointed out prof. Dr. Sofijanova.

Multisystem inflammatory syndrome occurs in children who have been asymptomatic cases, or had a mild clinical picture, and after a period of two to four weeks develop a disease, ie a new condition that is manifested primarily by very high temperature, over 39 degrees and even 40 degrees. which lasts for several days and which does not go down with antipyretics.

- There are skin changes such as rash on the face, hands, body, may have a rash in the mouth, eyes become red, conjunctiva is hyperemic, there is inflammation of the lungs, heart failure, tachycardia, skin pallor. Multisystem inflammatory syndrome causes in children and abdominal discomfort, pain, nausea, vomiting, enterocolitis, as well as renal failure, blood coagulation disorders, disturbance of consciousness, headaches and cramps, pointed out prof. Dr. Sofijanova.

When it comes to post-quid conditions prof. Dr. Sofijanova and that the practice shows an increased number of children with appendicitis, an increased number of cases of juvenile diabetes, as well as an increase in malignant diseases. However, further research will be needed to confirm whether they are related to covid-19. Regarding vaccination, she expressed the opinion of full support for vaccination of children over 12 years of age as well as those who have a chronic disease.

The President of the Medical Chamber, prof.
