Dr. Panovski: If omicron was deadly as a delta, we would have had up to 70 deaths a day on these infected
According to estimates by the microbiologist prof. Dr. Nikola Panovski, the more newly infected there are, the greater the number of hospitalizations, and thus the number of deaths.
- The exact reason why for days on a daily basis we have about 20 deaths, which occurred as a result of covid-19 is not known. "Detailed analyzes should be made, individually for each death, such as which diseases the people had, which vaccines they received, and whether they were fully vaccinated," Panovski told Nova Makedonija.
Panovski says that when in September last year there were 2.400 infected per day, there were up to 50 deaths per day.
- If the omicron was as deadly as the delta-strain, we would have had up to 70 deaths a day on this number of infected. "Omicron reduces mortality in percentage, but we still have a number of deaths on a daily basis that is not small," he said.
The professor also points out that it should first be determined how many of the dead were infected with delta and how many with omicron.
- Then, it should be analyzed whether and why many of the dead were hospitalized. Although the hospitals are not full, we are far from the maximum of filling the hospital facilities, however, as the number of hospitalized grows, so does the number of dead. We do not have detailed information for detailed analysis. We are talking on the basis of assumption, he explains.
