The director of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), William Burns, warned members of the US Congress that Ukraine could be defeated by the end of this year if aid to this country is not immediately approved, writes "Politico".

Speaking at an event at the George W. Bush, Burns urged lawmakers to pass legislation that would commit billions to Ukraine's war effort.

But if the bill doesn't pass Congress, "the picture is much more dire," he continued. "There is a very real risk that the Ukrainians will lose the battlefield by the end of 2024, or at least put (Russian President Vladimir) Putin in a position where he could essentially dictate the terms of a political settlement."

According to "Politico" this is probably the strongest warning from a senior official of the US administration so far regarding the war. The statement comes as officials in Kiev warn that an upcoming Russian offensive this summer – which would see massive waves of troops invading Ukraine – could overwhelm Kiev's troops fighting for their territory.
