Ceferin: There is no reason to expel Chelsea from the Champions League
UEFA President Alexander Cheferin said he hoped the British government would reconsider its decision to restrict the football club Челси due to the freezing of the property of Roman Abramovich and that the club will be able to continue competing in the Champions League.
The British government has decided to freeze the assets of Roman Abramovich, a Russian oligarch and owner of a London football club, which will allow Chelsea fans to watch only matches for which they have already bought tickets, while new tickets can not be sold.
In an interview for Slovenian television "POP-TV"Ceferin said he had spoken to the Chelsea president, who told him this was the first decision, but that he was already in talks with the government and expected it to change and the club to start functioning normally.
As for the performance in the Champions League, in the words of the UEFA president, "there is absolutely no reason" for Chelsea not to compete, or to be excluded from the competition.
Asked if he feared criticism that UEFA was collaborating with Russian oligarchs because the British prime minister said there could be no safe haven for those who support Russian President Vladimir Putin's attack on Ukraine, Ceferin said UEFA's decisions after the crisis were timely and correct.
Cheferin is in the election year and is running for a new term, dismissing speculation that he will need support from the Russian Federation, which will affect his position.
