Thousands of people fled the Syrian city of Homs overnight and this morning, Reuters reported.

The rebels have already captured Aleppo in the north and Hama in the central part of the country.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based military monitor, said thousands of people had started fleeing to Syria's west coast, which is a stronghold of government forces.

Residents confirmed that thousands of people are coming from Homs. Government forces have strengthened their positions around Homs, while rebels, led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, have announced they will launch an offensive on the strategic city, which links the capital Damascus to the north.
