Germany's lower house of parliament, the Bundestag, will hold a debate today on whether to send long-range Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine, despite opposition from Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

The corresponding proposal was tabled by the pro-business Free Democrats (FDP), which left Scholz's governing coalition last month after the chancellor fired FDP leader Christian Lindner as finance minister.

"Taurus" missiles will allow Ukraine to launch attacks on military targets far behind the front, according to the proposal of the FDP, which is unlikely to be voted on, DPA reported.

There has long been a debate over whether Germany should supply Ukraine with Taurus missiles for use in its fight against Russia's ongoing invasion.

Ukrainian leaders have repeatedly demanded missiles specifically from Berlin, but Scholz has vehemently refused to deliver the weapons to Kiev, saying he feared their delivery would draw Germany into the war.
