Bulgaria expels 70 Russian diplomats from Sofia over reciprocity, closes Russian Consulate General in Ruse

Bulgarian Prime Minister resigns Kiril Petkov, on the day of the fall of his government last week, in addition to political rivals, he mentioned the Russian ambassador to Sofia Eleonora Mitrofanova.

Today, the Bulgarian Deputy Foreign Minister, Irena Dimitrova, summoned the Ambassador of the Russian Federation, Eleonora Mitrofanova, to the Ministry, the press center of the Ministry announced.

According to the MIA correspondent from Sofia, Mitrofanova was informed about the decision of the Bulgarian authorities to reduce the number of employees in the Russian diplomatic missions in the Republic of Bulgaria to the limits that will not exceed the number of Bulgarian missions in the Russian Federation.

The number should be kept up to 23 diplomatic and 25 administrative-technical staff.

Bulgaria's request is based on reciprocity based on Art. 11 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

The staff of foreign missions should be maintained in a reasonable and normal framework, given the current state of bilateral relations.

Secondly, due to the activity of the Russian representatives, defined by the competent Bulgarian authorities as incompatible with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, aimed at developing friendly relations between the states.

The verbal note handed to the Russian ambassador in Sofia also states the expectation of the Bulgarian side that Russia will temporarily close its Consulate General in Ruse, and that Bulgaria will temporarily close its consulate in Yekaterinburg.

The Russian Ambassador Mitrofanova was introduced to the names of 70 associates of the missions of the Russian Federation in Bulgaria, who are to leave the country by July 3, 2022.
