Bulgaria fraternally supports Albania, but not Macedonia

We can not solve a problem that is more European than ours. And obviously Bulgaria's attitude towards enlargement is such a problem in which Macedonia is only a collateral damage.

Europe is clearly becoming aware of the damage done to it by the principles it has long ago established. From year to year or from one Council of Ministers to another, Macedonia receives more and more open support from member states in their efforts to become a full member of the Union. But all together they do not have enough strength to prevent Bulgaria's incomprehensible stubbornness and their notion of friendship, good neighborly relations, their historical baggage and a view of the European future of the Western Balkans. And for the sake of truth, not even a good part of the Bulgarian society understands what exactly Bulgaria is asking from Macedonia.

But it is naive to believe that Bulgaria's enlargement policy is naive. Namely, it does not deviate from the old Bulgarian aspirations for annexation of the "old lands", or if that is impossible for the division of Macedonia. The last move of the GAK meeting for open support of Albania, but not of Macedonia, is a subtle attempt to destabilize the Macedonian state and the region. First of all, it puts to the test the patience of Albania and the Albanians who now have to wait for Macedonia, as was the case before when we had to wait for Albania in the reforms. Namely, it is a fact that there is almost a consensus among the member states that the EU accession process should go together for these two countries. Bulgaria's position by favoring Albania is directly against this option.

European security policy and the United States must see this clearly and take "appropriate" measures to prevent such attempts by Bulgaria. What can be those "appropriate" measures I leave to the imagination of the mentioned great powers. Another diplomatic way of resolving the Bulgarian-Macedonian dispute is difficult to imagine, given that the Macedonian side has done almost everything in its power to make the Bulgarians understand (whoever they were at a given political moment), and to "ironed out" the relations that in the past period of "brotherhood" were totally broken.

At this moment, it seems that the Macedonian diplomacy has nothing new to offer in the bilateral relations that Bulgaria insists on, except to leave a peaceful flow of foreign aid, as it has done so far, showing European values in conducting foreign policy. Everything else would lead her to unwanted waters of direct confrontation with the stubbornness of the views of the Bulgarian Parliament and in a position of compromise, unacceptable for the Macedonian national interests.

Contacts should certainly continue, but they should not be expected to solve the problem.
