The numbers are optimistic: Skopje residents breathe the cleanest air, pollution has dropped
Air pollution in the capital decreased in the first quarter of this year, compared to the same period in previous years.
The state measuring stations for the months of January, February and March show a straight line drop in the level of PM10 particles on the territory of the city of Skopje.
The grouping of data, especially on a quarterly and annual basis, allows the exclusion of opportunities such as meteorological impacts, which on a monthly basis can compromise the picture. That is, if the sample of analyzed data is larger, conclusions can be made that more realistically show the factual situation, in the long run. Until now, the highest values were measured in 2017 when there were as much as 365.5 PM10 μg / m3. Since then, values have been steadily declining. Additionally, despite the steady decline, if we go back only a few years, we will see that the level of PM10 μg / m3 in just 4 years has fallen almost three times.
If until a few years ago Skopje was the city that was at the top of the lists of the most polluted cities, this year we can boast of 380th place, according to IQair, despite the fact that this year we did not have those emergency measures that were implemented by City of Skopje in order to influence the reduction of polluted air.
In the fight against the silent killer, one should defy the implementation of policies aimed at reducing ambient air pollution, by continuing intensified inspections, clearing illegal dumps, raising new green areas and raising stubble debris from side of town. Exactly in these can be included the citizens through the mass reporting of open fires, to use bicycles, electric scooters, to use the subsidies for cleaning the chimneys and to buy inverters.
