The ship "Ocean Viking" of the NGO "SOS Mediterranean" rescued 158 migrants off the Libyan coast today in two inflatable dinghies, the NGO said.

Among them were six pregnant women and several children, including a three-month-old baby.

One person was injured, according to the Marseille-based European Maritime Search and Rescue Organization.

According to the first testimonies, the migrants spent nine hours at sea and many of them were exhausted and emotionally disturbed, according to the organization, which works with the help of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

The Central Mediterranean is the most dangerous migrant route in the world, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The UN agency estimates that in 2021, 1.553 people died or went missing on that route.
