The US Senate unanimously approved diplomat Bridget Brink as ambassador to Ukraine, filling a critical position that has been vacant for three years.

The prompt confirmation underscored the desire of both sides to send an ambassador in support of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as he faces the Russian invasion.

The Senate decision came on the same day that the US Embassy in Kyiv reopened after a three-month closure due to the Russian invasion on February 24.

The Senate is also expected to approve nearly $ 40 billion in military and humanitarian aid to Kyiv later this week, funding that has already been voted on in the House of Representatives.

Born in Michigan, Bridget Brink speaks Russian and is currently the US Ambassador to Slovakia. She has been a diplomat for 25 years, working in Uzbekistan and Georgia, as well as several senior positions in the State Department and the White House National Security Council.

There has been no US ambassador to Kyiv since May 2019, when Trump abruptly recalled then-US Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Jovanovich.
