US President Joe Biden today offered a path to citizenship for hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants who marry US citizens, which is the complete opposite of the plans of his Republican rival Donald Trump, who promises mass deportations.

The program will be intended for almost 500.000 spouses of American citizens who have lived in the United States for at least 10 years on June 17, the Ministry of Homeland Security announced today.

Almost 50.000 children under the age of 21 who have a parent who has American citizenship will also have the right to citizenship. "It will promote family unity and strengthen our economy," the White House said.

Contrary to Trump's plans, Mexicans will be the biggest beneficiaries
Biden, a Democrat seeking re-election in November, took office promising to roll back many of the restrictive immigration policies introduced by his predecessor Trump, who is also seeking a return to the White House. But faced with record numbers of migrants apprehended at the Mexican border, Biden has toughened his approach in recent months.
