Bulgaria's strategic goal is the membership of Northern Macedonia and Albania in the European Union, said today the former Bulgarian Prime Minister and leader of Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) Boyko Borisov at a meeting with representatives of his party's youth.

As MIA reports from Sofia, informing that he had talked with Macedonian Prime Minister Zoran Zaev, Borisov stressed that the Good Neighborliness and Friendship Agreement of 2017 is the basis of Bulgaria's relations with the Republic of Northern Macedonia.

At the meeting with the party youth, Borisov said that the way in which the technical government of Bulgaria and Bulgarian President Rumen Radev are now negotiating with Northern Macedonia could lead to a bad result for Sofia or "cause the two closest countries and their peoples to hate each other in the coming decades." .

He appealed to young people to do everything possible so that current and future generations do not hate each other, accusing Radev of dividing Bulgaria, causing divisions in society over the issue of Northern Macedonia.

Borisov said he thought the current authorities in Sofia were lying, but called for a wait at the European Council on June 24 and 25.

- Before that is the NATO Summit. I hope they have the courage and skills to lead the negotiations that will make the two peoples of these two neighboring countries the most friendly, said Borisov.

He assessed that in the last four years, while GERB was in power in Bulgaria, his country was a leader in the Balkans.

- The current policy will make us hate each other, hate each other. Then, why would we need European projects? You are entering a country that does not love you. That is why Zoran Zaev and I are trying to get things from the bottom up, added Borisov.
