Borel visited Egypt and Lebanon
The first diplomat of the European Union, Josep Borrell, is leaving today for a multi-day visit to the Middle East to lobby for a ceasefire, with visits to Egypt and Lebanon.
Borrell plans to meet Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi tomorrow in Cairo, and also to visit the Rafah border crossing to the Gaza Strip, the EU foreign affairs office in Brussels said.
The meeting with mediators from Egypt, Qatar and the United States is "high on the agenda," his cabinet said.
On Tuesday, Borrell plans to meet with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Atti and participate in the Arab League meeting.
On Wednesday and Thursday, Borrell will be in Lebanon where he will meet with Prime Minister Najib Mikati, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and Commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces General Joseph Aoun.
He will also meet with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants of Lebanon, Abdallah Bou Habib, after which he will hold a press conference.
Borrell will discuss with his Lebanese counterpart the EU's support for "Lebanon's resilience and stability" and Lebanon's role in the region.
