Borrell hopes that the EU will adopt the new sanctions against Russia today
The European Union is expected today to reach an agreement on the new sanctions against Russia proposed by the European Commission due to the so-called referendums in Ukraine called by Moscow, as well as due to the mobilization announced by the Kremlin. This was announced by the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy and Security, Josep Borrell, before the European Parliament.
The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced that she will propose a general contract for gas supply and negotiations for lower prices with reliable suppliers. According to her, the EU can count on gas deliveries from the USA and Norway.
Von der Leyen specified that since the beginning of the Russian war in Ukraine, the EU has reduced the use of gas by ten percent. The share of Russian gas deliveries has decreased from 41 percent in February to 7,5 percent currently. European gas storages are up to 90 percent full, she pointed out.
