Bombs from the First World War fuel the fire in Galicica

49 fires have been recorded in Macedonia, 12 of which are still active. The largest active fires are in Galichica, where they are burning in two places, as well as the fire near Makedonski Brod above the village of Belica.

The mayor of the municipality of Ohrid, Kiril Petsakov, told Sloboden Pechat that the fire on the Ohrid side is under control and does not pose a danger to populated areas.

"The fire on Mount Galichica from the Macedonian side has been brought under control and there is no danger to the populated areas and the population that gravitates to this move. At the moment, around 120 people are involved in extinguishing the fire on the ground, and they are operating with two helicopters from the side of Ohrid and from the side of Prespa. "It is expected that during the day, three more planes will be activated for extinguishing from the air," Petsakov said.

Petsakov says that the situation on the Prespa side of Galichica is more serious because there are still unremoved old weapons and explosive devices on the ground.

"The situation with the fire on the Prespa side is more specific, where it has covered denser and higher-stemmed vegetation and extinguishing it is difficult. Extinguishing from the ground is also difficult due to the fact that there are unremoved old weapons and explosive devices on this terrain, which explode when the fire hits. During yesterday alone, more than 40 explosions were heard. We hope and believe that during today's day the fire will be localized and that it will be prevented from spreading further", says Petsakov.

The Ohrid mayor thanked everyone who put out the fire with a selfless effort and appealed not to spread unnecessary panic, to share verified information and to inform citizens only from relevant sources.

In addition to Galichitsa, the fires in Porecchiete cannot be extinguished for a whole month. The residents got used to living with the smoke, and as the mayor of Makedonski Brod, Zharko Ristevski, says, five fires are currently active in their area.

"A huge area of forest has been burned with huge damages, and the animal life has fled to other areas and so far there have been no human or animal victims," said Ristevski.

The mayor complains about the lack of sufficient number of volunteers and equipment for extinguishing the fires.

"There are not enough volunteers, but even those who sign up are engaged with previous consultations with appointed persons to fight the fire. The equipment used to extinguish fires is insufficient and unsuitable for extinguishing forest fires. "Help is always welcome, such as appropriate firefighting clothing for forest fires, equipment such as a rake, hoe, digger, ax, etc.," says Ristevski.

Boge Radevski, president of the local community in the village of Taževo, which was the most affected by the fire, also complained that there is not a sufficient number of volunteers and equipment.

"People are exhausted, they are extinguishing day and night, they don't have proper equipment, they don't have oxygen bottles, there are volunteers who don't have basic knowledge of fire extinguishing, this puts everyone at additional risk. The hill behind the "Belica" and "Chiflik" restaurants is still burning. Both left and right of "Belica" is burning, the picture is terrible. Yesterday afternoon there was a torrential rain of about 40 minutes which helped put out the fire in the area above the Bresnica River above the "Bogorodica" church. In the village of Breznica, flames are still visible. The picture is sad, a very large area has gone, a living world has burned. Inaccessible areas are burning. The locals are trying in every possible way to prevent the fire from spreading, so everyone cleans their yard," Radevski told Sloboden Pechat.

As Radevski said, in the village of Taževo, the flames engulfed about 25 holiday homes.

"We have had an environmental disaster. In the village of Taževo, about 25 holiday homes burned down, it was devastated, and thanks to the teams, the volunteers and the help from Romania, we saved the village of Breznica. I appeal to everyone who has some kind of property, holiday homes, to take measures, to be conscientious and to come and clean their own space", says Radevski.

After a two-week all-day fight with the fire, finally the fire in Pehchevo has been brought under control, said the mountaineer Marjan Mitrinovski, who helped in localizing the fire all this time.

"The fire in Pehchevo has been extinguished, only regular checks are carried out along the line of the fire. Teams from "Macedonian Forests", Forest Police, and a team from the Directorate for Protection and Rescue are on the ground," said Mitrinovski.

In July, 620 fires were registered, 66 of which occurred in the last 10 days of the month, while in August there were 40 fires each day.
