She fell in love with photographer Simon Utley, with whom she collaborated. Their journey in Thailand, where they headed to December 26, 2004, it turned into a horror.

Their story started like a fairy tale – Simon proposed and they started planning the wedding. But in one moment everything changed. Thailand it took a devastating toll on him tsunami which was caused by earthquake in the Indian Ocean and in which they perished 230.000 people.

The impact of the tsunami threw her and her fiance out of the bungalow where they were staying. She suffered an injury the pelvis и internal organs, but gathered the strength to get on palm tree, where 8 hours she was waiting for someone to save her.

"We returned to the bungalow hotel room after a long walk on the beach. Everything was wonderful, we noticed that the water had receded a lot from the beach and that surprised us," Petra said on one occasion.

Gusts of water broke all the windows in the room and separated them Petra and Simon. The last she heard from him was him calling her.

"At one point I accepted that I was going to die, I surrendered and felt an unusual peace," she added and emphasized that the urge to survive won. When the water level went down, she managed to climb a tree.

"The worst thing for me was that I saw the helpless children, I heard them screaming, and I couldn't do anything," mentioned Nemtsova, who was saved by the locals. The doctors estimated that she would not be able to walk due to her severe injuries, but she beat such forecasts.

She believed her fiance had survived and didn't want to leave Thailand until she knew something about him. He was found dead 3 months later.
