Bertomeu was fired, the clubs took over the Euroleague!
Jordi Bertomeu is no longer the head of the Euroleague. At the meeting of the clubs that took place today, according to the Greek "SDNA", he was relieved of his duty by 20 clubs completely unanimously.
He lost the support of 11 clubs that were previously behind him and had long-term licenses to play in the competition. In an anonymous vote, no one voted for him to remain at the helm of the Euroleague.
It all started a few months ago at a secret meeting in Athens when representatives of seven clubs (Panathinaikos, Olympiacos, Maccabi, Zalgiris, Efes, CSKA and Olympia Milan) agreed on steps to remove him. They were concerned about the financial situation of the competition and the way Bertomeu distributed money among the clubs.
Some time later, they were supported by everyone else with permanent licenses, such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, Baskonia and Fenerbahce. The "tower" slowly began to collapse, and today the decision to replace it was made unanimously. He will remain in the position of General Manager, but his powers will be reduced to a maximum and will have no impact.
Bertomeu is a Barcelona lawyer who was a senior Spanish basketball official from 1982 to 2000. He formed the Euroleague with his associates 20 years ago, which caused major disruptions in European basketball, which continue to this day. Over time, the Euroleague became an increasingly closed competition, in which the rich became privileged. We see that in the ABA League, where only a champion can reach a place in the elite competition.
