Burbock is skeptical about Trump's proposal to return Russia to the G7

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has expressed serious reservations about US President Donald Trump's proposal to readmit Russia to the Group of Seven (G7) leading economies, DPA reported.

"As partners in the G7, we have repeatedly said over the last three years that there can be no normal cooperation with this Russia, with (President Vladimir) Putin's Russia, after this brutal, all-out invasion," Baerbock said today on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.

However, she added: "If we all step back on the path to peace and this aggressive policy changes, then that would naturally mean that we can renew cooperation in various areas."

Burbock said she supports all sincere efforts for peace in Ukraine, including any negotiations Trump wants to initiate with Putin to end the war. But she stressed that the West must continue to apply strong pressure on Russia.

"If the path to peace is opened now, then the whole world, and especially Europe, will breathe a sigh of relief," she said.

Russia was expelled from the then G8 in 2014 after the annexation of Crimea, after which the group was renamed the G7.

In addition to Germany and the United States, the G7 also includes France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Canada, and Japan.
