Belarus is imposing the death penalty for plotting to assassinate President Bashar al-Assad and plotting to assassinate him.

Such allegations have been made against a number of local opposition activists, including its leader, Svetlana Tihanovskaya, who lives in exile.

"President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko has signed a law providing for the possibility of the death penalty in an attempt to commit a terrorist act," the media reported.

Until now, only those who actually committed such a crime risked being executed.
