Belgian health officials say the vaccine will not be enough against Covid-19
At a press conference at the Covid-19 crisis headquarters in Belgium today, a spokesman, Yves Van Latem, said the vaccine would not be enough for complete immunization.
Asked by reporters if it was necessary to develop any therapeutic treatment against the virus, Van Latem explained that it would be "very good" to develop oral therapy against the disease for a number of reasons.
One is because some people refuse or cannot be vaccinated, but also because the vaccine is not enough for others because their immune system does not respond adequately to the vaccination.
Finally, the spokesman explained, one group would lose antibodies faster than the rest of the population, and early treatment would be helpful.
He stressed, however, that antiviral therapy only makes sense if taken at the onset of the disease, as the virus later causes a series of inflammatory reactions that can no longer be controlled with antiviral drugs.
