US President Joe Biden on Tuesday expressed "extreme concern" over the violence in Myanmar, which he called "terrible", on the occasion of the annual summit of the United States and the Organization of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). transmits Reuters.

Joe Biden also called on the junta to "immediately end all violence, release the unjustly imprisoned and return Myanmar to the path of democracy," the White House said in a statement.

On February 1, Myanmar's military arrested Aung San Suu Kyi, who led the elected government, and placed her under house arrest. The coup ended a ten-year period of democratic rule after half a century of military rule and sparked unanimous international criticism, from Pope Francis to US President Joe Biden.

Myanmar, where post-coup chaos still reigns, was the main topic of an ASEAN summit on Tuesday, in which the junta leader was barred from attending as international pressure on the military regime grew.
