Biden supported Lula's proposal for new elections in Venezuela
US President Joe Biden expressed support for his Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's proposal for new elections in Venezuela, after the country's political crisis escalated following the July 28 presidential election, the results of which were not recognized by the opposition.
- I support that, Biden answered when asked if he was behind the proposal for new elections, during a press conference at the White House.
Earlier today, Lula da Silva said that he still does not recognize Nicolás Maduro as the winner of the elections and added that if he has "common sense", he will call new elections.
The leader of the Venezuelan opposition, María Corina Machado, called the proposal to repeat the elections an "insult" to the Venezuelan people, asking a rhetorical question: "If Maduro continues not to recognize the results, will we go to a third election?"
Maduro himself commented on these proposals, stating that "the elections have already taken place".
