Australian authorities urged young tourists from abroad to take up seasonal jobs in agriculture and hospitality during a state visit to alleviate labor shortages due to the spread of covid infection 19.

The Prime Minister Scott Morrison said his government was waiving the $ 630 ($ 453) visa fee for all travelers and students arriving in Australia in the next 12 weeks and encouraged them to consider working in seasonal jobs during the visit.

"Visit the whole country and at the same time join our workforce and help us in the agricultural sector, the catering sector and many other parts of the economy for which this work is crucial," Morrison told a televised news conference.

Officials reported 67 new deaths and nearly 80.000 new infections by noon local time today, and Western Australia has yet to provide daily figures.

There were 77 deaths yesterday, the most since the beginning of the pandemic. So far, 2.843 people have died from Covid infection. Australian companies have found themselves in great difficulty due to the large number of sick workers and those in isolation. Labor shortages are hampering the recovery of the economy and causing supply problems, with large retailers again restricting the purchase of basic necessities.

An increasing number of hospitalizations are simultaneously putting pressure on the health system. As of yesterday, 5.025 citizens were hospitalized, compared to 759 admitted to hospitals a month ago. Nearly 1,3 million cases of infection, out of a total of 1,6 million, have been identified in the last two weeks.

A state of emergency has been declared in hospitals in the state of Victoria, and nurses in New South Wales are protesting against a shortage of health workers.
