Australia may soon ban certain video games for minors
Australia plans to introduce an 18+ rating for all video games that simulate gambling, or an M (mature) rating for games where certain "items" and "coins" are bought and then used in the game Australia may soon ban certain video games games for minors.
That could limit access to games like FIFA, while Fortnite developers have already removed elements that could be objectionable to Australian lawmakers. There is a growing concern as children have easy access to video games with gambling elements, which increases the chances that they will actually become addicted to gambling in the future.
Australian Communications Minister Michelle Rowland said the proposed 18+ and M designations should end these problems and prevent video game players from turning to gambling later. Namely, this proposal would allow parents more control in situations where they do not know what a game is.
"That way a parent would know that a particular game contains some form of simulated gambling," Rowland said, adding that under-18s would not be able to purchase such games, Kamatica reports.
The World Health Organization has classified computer game addiction as a disease. This disease mostly affects teenagers and the younger population, and the most common symptoms are the priority of playing games over family and society, diet, sleep, schooling.
