British MPs dismiss Johnson, race to succeed him heats up

Outgoing British Prime Minister Boris Johnson yesterday he addressed the parliament for the last time as the country's leader. Sent off with applause from MPs, Johnson in "his style" ended his speech with the famous saying from the film "Terminator 2" by Arnold Schwarzenegger, "Asta la vista, baby".

Johnson was forced to resign earlier this month after the pressure on him over the series of scandals reached its peak.

Speaking at his latest appearance on "Questions to the Prime Minister", a meeting held every week in parliament, where almost every time the situation escalates and there is a heated debate about the work of the government, Johnson briefly described the things his government has done for during the mandate.

"We helped, I helped, this country to deal with the pandemic and we saved Britain from barbarism. Honestly, I think this is enough for the end. The mission was mostly successful," said Johnson.

He ended the speech with: "I want to thank everyone present and asta la vista, baby!".

The irony of British MPs

Many of those who applauded Johnson in parliament yesterday are the very same ones who actually forced him to resign.

The same MPs, two weeks ago, criticized his rule and demanded his resignation. Some of his closest people in the cabinet have resigned, and some of them are now in the race to sit in his chair.

But not all MPs enjoyed Johnson's last speech.

As it says "Reuters", Boris's predecessor, Theresa May, was among those who applauded us.

Opposition MPs also did not express support for the outgoing British Prime Minister. During the debate they repeatedly criticized Johnson for his policies during the administration.

The opposition leader Kir Starmer, who says he "can't wait for the 2024 election", was not at all shy last night to list all the failures of the Johnson Government.

"He decided to come out of his golden bunker one last time to tell us that everything is under control." I'll miss his delusion.'' Starmer says.

Close race to succeed Johnson

The Conservatives are set for a tight race between the former finance minister in Johnson's government, Rishi Sunak and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Liz Tras, who have already entered the six-week battle to become Britain's next prime minister, writes "The Guardian".

According to "PoliticoProbably one of these two candidates will be the next British Prime Minister.

The third entrant in the race, Penny Mordont, is behind Sunak and Truss in polls, but her supporters say her role should not be underestimated.

After Tuesday's elimination round, Sunak received 118 votes from Conservative MPs, Mordont received 92 and Truss 86.

Although she is consistently in third place in the polls so far, Tras is favored by both analysts and bookmakers. The next elimination round is expected as a direct match between Mordont and Trass, which of them will stay in the "final" and face Sunak.

The deadline for Tories to cast their votes is September 2, and the winner will be announced on September 5. Johnson will officially step down on September 6.
