Asselborn to Western countries: China beware
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Luxembourg, Jean Asselborn, said today that Western countries should be careful not to become dependent on China.
Ahead of the North Atlantic Council meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Bucharest, Asselborn told reporters that there are many parts of China in mobile phones and cars, and care should be taken that this does not turn into a form of of strategic dependence.
Asselborn said that NATO and China are "on the same page" regarding Russian nuclear threats as part of its war against Ukraine.
I believe that China also wants the Russian war against Ukraine to be ended and that a nuclear catastrophe does not occur, added Asselborn, who has been the head of Luxembourg's diplomacy since 2004.
He criticized Chinese authorities for using force against participants in this week's protests in Chinese cities.
In the 21st century, you cannot put the citizens in one frame and tell them that there is only one philosophy and that of the state. People aspire to freedom and the Chinese will have to accept that, Asselborn said.
