Anti-Semitism is out of control, says UN High Commissioner for Human Rights

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, said anti-Semitism is "out of control" in the world today, 80 years after the horrors of the Holocaust. He also condemned growing attacks on diversity after US President Donald Trump rolled back inclusion measures in the United States.

In a statement on the occasion of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, Türk recalled that eight decades ago, on January 27, the prisoners of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp were liberated, transmits The Times of Israel.

"Weary, exhausted, terrified and sick, those 7.000 people were all that remained of the 1,3 million men, women and children who were deported to Auschwitz," said Thierk.

He says he believes Holocaust Memorial Day is a wake-up call to the dangers of indifference, complacency and apathy, and a reminder of the duty to oppose intolerance.

"Today, hateful rhetoric resonates across much of our world," the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said, adding that anti-Semitism is rampant on the streets and online and that Jews are facing increased intimidation, threats and physical violence.

He appealed to people to fight for dignity and human rights and to condemn and prevent anti-Semitism, intolerance and hatred, Israeli media reported.
