England: They burned her with iron and hot water - father and stepmother accused of murdering 10-year-old Sarah
The father and stepmother of 10-year-old Sarah Sharif from England have been found guilty of her murder after subjecting her to "horrendous suffering" for more than two years, it has been reported. The BBC.
Sarah was hooded, set on fire and beaten before her body was found with dozens of injuries at the family home in Woking Anglia last year.
The girl's father Urfan Sharif, 43, and stepmother Beinash Batul, 30, were today found guilty of her murder, while her uncle Faisal Malik, 29, was found guilty of causing or allowing the death of a child.
After the verdict, a police officer involved in the case said he had never seen "such terrible suffering on a young man" in his 30 years of policing.
"It's one of those cases that touches every person involved in it, and I'm sure it touches many members of the community," he added.
He added: "The murder of a child is absolutely shocking, but the abuse Sarah suffered during her short life made this case particularly disturbing."
Children's Commissioner Dame Rachel de Souza said Sarah's killing highlighted "deep weaknesses in our child protection system".
"We cannot have more criticism, strategies, debates, she added.
The commissioner called for a raft of changes, including "proper supervision" for children, like Sarah, who are home-schooled.
During the trial, the jury heard and saw how a post-mortem examination showed Sarah had suffered injuries including "probable human bite marks", iron burns and hot water burns before she died on August 8 last year.
Next to Sarah's body, which police found in bed, was a note in her father's handwriting that read: "Whoever sees this note, I am Urfan Sharif who beat my daughter to death."
