Americans are increasingly afraid of retirement
Americans fear retirement the most in the last 11 years, according to a survey by the Gallup company. Only 43 percent of non-retired US adults believe they will have enough money to live comfortably after they retire, the lowest since 2012, CNN reports. The percentage of those who believe that they will live well in retirement will decrease by five percent compared to last year, and by 10 percent compared to 2021. The numbers are "pretty bleak," Gallup chief Muhammad Younis said, and he says they reflect concerns about high housing costs, fears about the safety of money in bank accounts and fears of a possible recession. The survey, which was conducted between April 3 and 25, found that women are significantly more worried about their future in retirement, as 36 percent of women compared to 50 percent of men think they will live carefree in old age.
