America announced a new military aid package for Ukraine worth one billion dollars
The administration of the American president Joe Biden announced that it would send another package of military aid to Ukraine, worth one billion dollars. It is the largest shipment of arms to Ukraine from US stockpiles, the media reports.
The package includes additional ammunition for missile systems of the type HIMARS, as well as artillery ammunition, mortar systems, anti-tank rocket launchers and other ammunition and equipment.
With this help the total value of the US military donation for Ukraine it will amount to about nine billion dollars.
The package released yesterday allows the US to send weapons and equipment to Ukraine more quickly, as they will be sent from US Department of Defense stockpiles.
"At every stage of this conflict, we have been focused on getting the Ukrainians what they need, depending on the situation on the battlefield," said Under Secretary in US Department of Defense Colin Cal.
When asked by a journalist why the US is not sending more HIMARS missile systems, but only ammunition for them, Kahl said that they are effective even in small numbers.
"These are precision-guided systems for certain types of targets, and that's how they're used by the Ukrainians," Kahl said.
He added that the US and its allies are still considering whether to send fighter jets to Ukraine and that this possibility "is not turned off".
The US and some other NATO countries have so far not sent planes to Kyiv, due to fears that it could involve them more directly in the war between Ukraine and Russia.
