Amazon lays off 9.000 workers
Amazon CEO Andy Jessee announced in a letter to employees that the company will cut another 9.000 jobs. The latest job cuts come after the company announced earlier this year that it was cutting about 18.000 jobs to cut costs. Jesse confirmed that there will be another wave of layoffs in the coming weeks.
"This was a difficult decision, but we think it's best for the company in the long run." Some may be wondering why we didn't announce these role cuts with the ones we announced a few months ago. "The short answer is that not all teams completed their analysis in late fall, and rather than rush into decisions without proper evaluation, we decided to share this decision as we made it so people have information as soon as possible," Jesse said.
Amazon's latest layoffs come amid a spate of layoffs in the tech industry in recent months as the sector struggles with falling demand for digital goods and services and broader macroeconomic uncertainty. Amazon, like many other big tech companies, quickly increased the number of employees in the first days of the pandemic.
Jesse explained that the hiring "made sense given what's going on at the company and the economy as a whole." "But given the uncertain economy in which we live and the uncertainty that exists in the near future, we have decided to be more rational in costs and in the number of employees," he concluded.
