Albania is getting older, half of the inhabitants are over 36 years old

Albania is getting old. Today more than half of the inhabitants are older than 36 years, in contrast to 1990 when the average age of the population was 24 years. It is a bell that heralds a disaster, states the newspaper "Tema".– Migration has devastating effects on our country. Why? If in the 90s we had 4 employees for one pension beneficiary, today we have 1,4 employees for one pension beneficiary. With this trend in the 2030s we will have 1,2 employees for one pension beneficiary. This shows that the pensionsystem is collapsing, says economics professor Klaudian Mucho.

According to Denisa Canametti from the health program at the "Together for Life" association, the departure of professionals, not only in the health system, but in every sector, leaves a very big void.

– For a country like ours, the pandemic brought a strong blow to health and the economy. The isolation effect was observed in the first months of 2020 and at the end of it, and for the first time there was no natural increase. The number of deaths was higher than the number of births, while the insufficient aid of oneon the one hand and the high costs of treatment on the other, became a strong motive for leaving, she says. This health crisis has been just as severe in the economy.

- Albania went through a very difficult period during the pandemic that started in 2020 and it will necessarily have its own reflections. I once said that this is a medical pandemic, but we must beware of an economic and human pandemic, because I knew there would be a big hit. The first hit is the local business, secondly, the citizens are affected. No one tells them the truth, and the truth is that immigration is very strong, bitter, difficult. Anyone who decides to cross the English Channel in 7 hours is known to be in big trouble, said entrepreneur Gjergi Gjika. He adds that Albanian society as a whole is under attack, not only from an age point of view, but also in terms of effectiveness in the economy.- Migration reduces the number of able-bodied people in the country. Women are giving birth to fewer and fewer children, and they resolve this when they turn 27 or older. Each year, 34.000 fewer children sit in school desks, and the number of those who retire each year is 15.000. Albania turned into a phenomenon of depopulation. We will have neither birth nor youth. We will no longer have a workforce. And to have economic development, which will work in Albania, says the statistics expert, Ines Nurja.
