A 5,8-meter-long great white shark bit off the head of a diver in Mexico in the first fatal attack by the animal this year in that area, US media reported.

Manuel Lopez was diving to collect molluscs in Tobari Bay when he was attacked and killed in front of the fishermen there.

"He was diving when the animal attacked him, took off his head and bit him on both shoulders," Jose Bernal told a local media outlet, adding that divers had been warned about sharks and many did not dive.

However, Lopez decided to continue because he wanted to make more money and take advantage of the increased demand due to the seafood shortage.
