For the time being, there is no answer from DUI why Ahmeti is reticent in the request and returns the country to the nineties, when the first president of Macedonia, Kiro Gligorov, was elected to the Parliament, and on the proposal of VMRO-DPMNE, then led by Ljubco Georgievski, the position of vice president was established. of the president of the state.

The ruling DUI and the opposition coalition "Vredi" demand that the election of the head of state be abolished in immediate elections, in opposition to the presidential and parliamentary elections. Although their demands, related to the opening of the Constitution, differ in nuances when it comes to the new way of electing the head of state, both DUI leader Ali Ahmeti and the presidential candidate of the opposition coalition "Vredi" Arben Taravari emphasize that without fulfilling the this condition, their parties and coalitions will not be part of any future government.

The tendency of the two leaders with these proposals is for Macedonia to have an Albanian - president of the state, because in immediate elections this is practically impossible to achieve without prior consensus.

First, Taravari requested that the head of the state be elected in the Parliament instead of plebiscite, and today Ahmeti upgraded the request and, apart from the president, also requested the establishment of a new position - the deputy of the president, who would also be elected in the Parliament, and that with two-thirds majority of the total number of deputies and with the so-called Badenter's majority, that is, a simple majority of deputies from ethnic communities. Its goal is ethnic equality in the state leadership.

- We demand a constitutional amendment and the election of the president and deputy president of the state in the Assembly in order to realize our vision of a consensual president, as well as the inclusion of the Bulgarian and other communities in the Constitution. Before you, I make a firm vow that we will not be part of any government that will not change the Constitution and we will go into opposition to fight and defeat the existential threats to our country. Without completing this process, my work is not finished and I will not leave our path, it will not be paradise without the country seeing the light of day - said Ahmeti.

Ahmeti two years ago, in a statement for Free Press said that the society should first prepare for the election of an Albanian president of the state in immediate elections, because the international representatives suggested to him that if the proposal goes through the Parliament, it will mean a regression of democracy.

- It is important that the proposal of an Albanian for the president of the state be a citizens' initiative and be supported by all citizens, regardless of ethnicity. We broke the ice, when in the last presidential elections we did not come up with our own candidate, but we stood behind the candidacy of Stevo Pendarovski, so DUI and I personally campaigned for him to win - Ahmeti told us then.

The DUI leader dropped that "bomb" at the height of a campaign for local elections in 2021 and said that the presidency is the last barrier to breaking down inter-ethnic barriers in Macedonian society.

- It is very important to destroy that taboo, to destroy the myth that an Albanian cannot be the president of the country. The civil sector, intellectuals and social workers, should open the topic. It is time to start talking about it, and when it will be realized, we will see - said the leader of the DUI.

He then explained that he abandoned the idea of electing the head of state in the Parliament, because he did not have the support of the Macedonian parties.

- I have no support in the Parliament for changing the Constitution in the section for the election of the president of the state. But I decided on that after suggestions from the international community - Ahmeti said then.

Asked then whether they will go with a party or non-party candidate in the presidential elections in 2024, he replied that it is too early to say. When asked if he might want the position, he answered:

– I don't like functions. It is not my idea, but that of a British professor who wrote in an analysis from 2001 that Ahmeti will finish his political career as the president of the country - Ahmeti told us then.

If Ahmeti did not have support in the Parliament then, it is unclear whether he has it now or the retraction in his views is due to Taravari's proposal.

Taravari, on the other hand, last night, at an extraordinary press conference, emphasized that he and his partners entered the presidential race with greater goals.

- My goal and that of my partners is twofold - we intend for the first time for the Albanian candidate to enter the second round of the presidential elections and we want to open the great debate about the position of president in our political system - stressed Taravari.

He added that our entire political and constitutional system was built on the model of consensual democracy between the two largest nationalities, and this was sanctioned by the introduction of the Ohrid Agreement into the Constitution.

- Therefore, my presidential platform will be built around the strengthening of consensual democracy, in line with the thought of Arben Xhaferi. My partners and I aim for the future opening of the Constitution to include three elements: inclusion of Bulgarians and other minorities in the Constitution; removing the 20 percent that defines the Albanian language; and the election of the president should be done in the Assembly, not through elections. This is the big news. In this way, in the future, the political forces representing the two largest nationalities together in the Parliament will decide on the distribution of the three highest state functions - Taravari said.

He called on Albanians and DUI to support his vision and his candidacy.

- Now we have the opportunity to strengthen consensual democracy together in a constitutional way - said the candidate of "Vredi".
