These days we're all looking for ways to deal with the rising prices of essentials and are starting to think outside the box when it comes to how we plan, shop and cook at home.

"There are a lot of tools to track how much we spend on food, but no one tracks how much food (and therefore money) we throw away," says Ben Ebrell, chef and co-founder of the YouTube channel Sorted Food.

Meal planning apps like Sorted's Sidekick help people start thinking like a professional chef running a restaurant at home, making money, serving delicious food, spending less and reducing food waste, the Independence reports.

"Even with the best meal planning intentions, when most of us go grocery shopping, we have a list of ingredients we use for individual meals, but that often means we end up with leftovers that end up in the trash," says Sorted co-founder Jamie Spafford.

And wasted food means wasted money. So read on for some money-saving tricks when planning meals and shopping.

Don't buy anything that isn't on the list

Note that essentials like bread and milk are placed at the back of shops, meaning you have to walk past everything else to get to them – be careful and resist the temptation. Move only through the paths you know you need.

Don't fall into the discount trap

When you walk past the heavily discounted shelves, you're more likely to buy something you didn't plan on – try not to look at those deals unless those items are on your list.

Pay attention to the price-quality ratio

More expensive/branded items are on eye-level shelves. So shop around to find products that are more affordable. Also compare the price per kilo to determine which one is really cheaper.

Be careful with loyalty cards in some markets

Lower prices are sometimes only available to cardholders in certain markets. Make sure you've signed up for those cards to get these offers. But be careful with the offers they send you to get you to buy more.

Make a shopping plan

Have an idea of what you're going to cook each day and buy only the ingredients you need, instead of grocery shopping and buying things that look nice or are on sale but you don't actually need.

Don't buy fresh food if you don't have a plan for what to do with it

This is when the expiration date can be your friend or foe. If you can afford a product and have the space to store it, buy in larger packages – it will be cheaper in the long run. Make more than you need and freeze – you'll save time and money.

Shop seasonally

It will be cheaper to buy seasonal fruits and vegetables that are grown and harvested now, and as for herbs, they do not last too long if you buy them in plastic packaging. So use them quickly.
