12th night of protests in Iran over the death of a woman arrested for violating the hijab
Iranians have been protesting for 12 consecutive nights due to the death of Mahsa Amini, despite the increasing number of victims and the fierce action of the security forces. Protests continued in various cities including Tehran, Tabriz, Karaj, Qom, Yazd after 22-year-old Amini died while in moral police custody for allegedly wearing a hijab improperly.
Scenes showing street clashes with security have been posted on social media, but activists say internet outages make it difficult to share videos. The semi-official Fars news agency said "about 60" people had been killed so far, up from 41 reported on September 24, but the Iran Human Rights group said at least 76 people had been killed. Officials said more than 1.200 arrests were made across the country, including activists, lawyers and journalists.
Among those arrested is the daughter of former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani for inciting protests, Tasnim news agency reported. Several Iranian university professors joined the student protests by refusing to attend classes or resigning.
